Capacity Building

PeopleFund was selected by the Austin CHDO Roundtable, a coalition of area nonprofit Community Housing Development Organizations, to administer a new affordable housing initiative. The goal of the program is to help affordable housing nonprofits build more homes for those with the greatest need. This program provides training, organizational assessments, consulting on best practices, and grant monies for nonprofit housing developers.

Capacity Building Program
Despite the critical role that nonprofit housing developers play in meeting local housing needs, the full production potential of these organizations has yet to be realized. There are over twenty nonprofit organizations in Austin that are engaged in affordable housing production, many have limited capacity to consistently produce housing units. The genesis of the capacity building program is to help increase efficiency and production.

The program’’s main functions can be divided generally into two areas: 1) the provision of technical assistance and 2) the disbursement of capacity building grants.

Eligibility
The program is promoted to all locally-based nonprofit housing developers working within the City of Austin.

Resources
The City of Austin and The Enterprise Foundation have provided funding for Capacity Building grants to be used for predevelopment activities and organizational support. While all groups have access to training and technical assistance support, allocation of grant funding is based on a competitive process and is tied to expected increases in housing production.
